Seated in the north of the country, Groningen is a student city, safe and lively, offering many social and cultural events. Founded in 1614, University of Groningen is the second oldest educational institution in the Netherlands. The University has a very good international reputation, being considered an elite university in Europe, with numerous partnerships with universities outside the Netherlands, offering also masters with dual specialization in collaboration with universities from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Hungary , United Kingdom, Chile and Spain. International students rate this as the most welcoming university in the Netherlands. In Europe, the university is ranked among the top three, with research focusing on fields like Ecology, Space Science, Chemistry and Astronomy. Other research groups working in the fields of nanotechnology, molecular biology, medicine, neurology, sociology, philosophy, theology, architecture and art. The university`s graduates include a Nobel laureate, the first female professor in the Netherlands, the first Dutch astronaut and first president of the European Central Bank.
