The educational system in Switzerland is one of the most prestigious and exclusive in the world. Safety and quality of life, cultural and linguistic diversity as well as its central position within the European continent, make Switzerland one of the most attractive destinations for those interested in developing a career in the international tourism and hotel industry.
The responsibility for education belongs to the 26 cantons. Therefore, school systems and programs vary from one canton to another. The most pronounced differences are observed in the study of languages. The only schools for which the confederation (central administration) is directly responsible are the two polytechnic universities: Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
Switzerland has a quite diverse educational system and respects the Bologna agreement (180 ECTS (Bachelor's degree) - that is 3 years of university studies - 90-120 ECTS (Master's degree) - that is 1 and ½ or 2 years of master's degree, and the duration the doctorate depends on the university from the university and from one course to another). The Master's degree in Applied Sciences, which lasts only one year, does not offer you the possibility to continue the studies towards a doctorate.
